Bird News from Mowgli's Eco-Adventure Tours

The following 16 species of birds (new for Chitwan) have been recorded in the dense broad leaf forest along the route of the Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek in the Mahabharat hill range within the Chitwan district from May 15 th to 19 th 2006, namely Large Niltava Niltava grandis, Orange-flanked bush Robin Tarsiger cyanurus, Broad-billed Warbler Tickellia hodgsoni , Striated Laughingthrush Garrulax striatus, Chestnut-crowned Laughing Thrush Garrulax erythrocephalus , Streak breasted scimitar Babbler Pomatorhinus ruficollis ,Silver-eared Mesia Leiothrix argentauris, Red-billed Leothrix Leiothrix lutea, Cutia Cutia nipalensis, Rufous-winged Fulvetta Alcippe castaneceps, Whiskered Yuhina Yuhina flavicollis , Rufous Sibia Heterophasia annectans, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker Dicaeum ignipectus , Pale blue Flycatcher Cyornis unicolor , Asian House Martin Delichon dasypus and Black Eagle Ictinaetus malayensis These species were recorded by local tourist guides during the Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek Tourism Promotional Tour 2006, said ornithologist Hem Subedi an executive member of Nepal Rare Birds Committee as well as member secretary of Bird Education Society. He aid much of the forest in the area is still virgin as no body has explored it up until now. Mr. Subedi said a proper bio-diversity survey in this area should be conducted, as the area has much altitudinal variation and different landscapes, many places have pristine forest. If a deadline bird survey is conducted in this area, there is a great chance to discover many new birds for Chitwan from the area.
