| World Wetlands Day 2006 Celebration & 2nd Taudaha Jamboree |
|
Following heals of last year's successful World Wetlands Day celebration, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) promoted World Wetlands Day 2006 celebration, including Taudaha Jamboree.
To undertake actions aimed at raising awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and Ramsar Convention in particular, Friends of the Bagmati in partnership with World Wildlife Fund - Nepal (WWF Nepal Program) and Department of National Park & Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), Sustainable Tourism Network (STN)–Nepal and other partners organized various events during this celebration.
The celebration began on 21st January with Cleaning up program at Taudaha and concluded on 2nd February with 'Workshop on Ponds of Kathmandu Valley'. During this celebration interactions and features about wetlands of Nepal are broadcast through various FM Radio stations including Radio Sagarmatha. The main attraction of this celebration was Taudaha Jamboree that included activities such as Cycle Rally, Bird Watching, Nature Hike Race, Meethila Art, Exhibitions and Green Map for School Students.
Taudaha is one of the largest ponds of the Kathmandu Valley that has contributed to recharge the groundwater of the Bagmati Watershed Region. Taudaha is immensely rich in floral and faunal diversity but today it is under pressure from increasing anthropogenic activities.
During the workshop, presentations on various issues regarding management and conservation of ponds, including Tourism Values of Ponds of Kathmandu Valley were made. Mr. Subash Nirola, Director, Nepal Tourism Board, during his presentation lauded the role of all stakeholders ‘to start with a Pond (Pokhari) Management Plan of Rani Pokhari , Kamal Pokhari and Nag Pokhari and continue till we all achieve the final goals in making all existing and potential ponds of Kathmandu Valley a potential tourist attraction.'
The students, government and non-governmental organization’s representatives, tourism entrepreneurs, tourists, wetland experts, ornithologists, volunteers and general public attended the events. More than four hundred people attended the Jamboree and around 190 people participated in the Workshop.

STN Participation in 3rd Meghauli Festival |
|
The Meghauli Festival in the beginning of February 2006 became STN's first festival participation where a booth was taken. Though active participation was expected from STN members, the timing of the Festival was coinciding with the run-up to the elections which meant that only some of the members participated. The stall was mainly manned by Center for Rural Technology whose pawan mukhi chulo and the vegetable matter briquettes were a great hit. Brochures and information from some other members was also prominently displayed in the stall.
Among the STN members, the festival was visited by Bijaya Pradhan (Dream Nepal) Birgit Lienhart (SNV) Vishwaraj Gyawali (socialtours.com) and was actively supported by Amar Mali (Rhino Resort, Meghauli)
At Meghauli though, the participation was staggering, with over 10-15,000 locals visiting the festival daily with its food stalls, consumer goods stalls and games.
Meghali Tourism Development Committee organized the 3rd Meghauli Festival.
