Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Programme (TRPAP)
is a pilot community based pro poor tourism programme running
in six rural districts of Nepal-Taplejung, Solukhumbu, Rasuwa,
Chitwan, Rupandehi and Dolpa. These areas were chosen based
on the existing tourism development or its potential, and
the extent to which significant elements of poverty and
marginalised social groups were in need of support.
Launched in September 2001 with assistance from United Nations
Development Programme, Department for International Development
and SNV-Nepal, TRPAP aims at contributing to achieve the
single key strategic goal of poverty reduction of the Government
of Nepal (GoN) through sustainable rural tourism development
that is pro-poor, pro-environment, pro-rural communities
and pro-women.
TRPAP has multifaceted activities for community
and tourism development, covering human resource development,
gender issues, Infrastructure development, new tourism products
development and marketing, environmental protection and
its management. Major tourist related activities that encompass
financial benefits to local communities include community
owned camp sites, lodges, home stays, Multiple Use Visitor
Centres, etc.
Porters and well qualified trekking guides are available locally.
