Dolpa is connected to Nepalgunj, 155 km to the south
west, by air. The nearest road head in Baglung district
lies almost a weeks’ walk to the east, but this
would not be a viable option for trekkers who would like
to spend more time in Dolpa.
Therefore, the best feasible option is the scheduled flight
to Juphal airport or a chartered helicopter. Flight from
tourist hub Pokhara to Juphal could be an option which
is not currently available, but has prospects if the number
of tourists from that sector increases.
Nepalgunj has been developed as a hub for all air operations
in the mid and far western sector of the country. Most
chartered flights to districts like Dolpa carry food and
other essential supplies which are ferried from the nearest
major Tarai town. As a result the economic linkage of
the people of districts like Dolpa is mostly with the
southern Tarai towns like Nepalgunj, rather than Kathmandu
or Pokhara.
Presently there are four scheduled flights per week by
RNAC to Juphal from Nepalganj through the 18 seater STOL
DHC aircraft. Yeti, Skyline and Shangrila are other airlines
that have chartered flights, both passenger and freight,
to Juphal.
